Norfolk Girls’ Softball

12U Summer Tournament Team

Please read this notice carefully.  There is a lot of information included.

There is a unique opportunity for all 12U eligible girls in Norfolk this year.

(Must be  age 11 or 12  on January 1^st 2006 to qualify*)

*eligible 10 year old may be considered if space is available

Norfolk Girls’ Softball will offer a tryout for a competitive 12U Summer Tournament Team.  This team will compete in some weekend Tournaments along with the Hockomock Girls Summer Softball League Schedule (usually two games/week).  If you are unable to make the commitment to the tournament team, there will be an additional summer team offered in May that will play in the Hockomock Girls Summer Softball League (2 games/week).

We have been asked by Plainville to co-host the State Tournament for the 12U Girls.  Some parents have expressed an interest so we feel this is a great opportunity for the girls on this team to compete at a different level.  Also, we want to take advantage of the State Tournament being local. 

There will be minimum time commitment to qualify for this team.  The team will be entered into at least three Tournaments (Memorial Day, State Tournament and a July Tournament).  If the team wins in the States they qualify to go to the Regionals in Rhode Island and depending on the outcome could go onto the Nationals.  The dates for all of these Tournaments will be given out prior to the tryouts, along with the price, coaches, schedule, and the minimum commitment.

We wanted every girl to have prior knowledge of this to prepare for the tryouts.

As this will be a very competitive team every eligible girl should spend some time this winter preparing for an earlier tryout.  There are several opportunities for anyone interested to take lessons locally.  Norfolk Girls’ Softball is offering winter clinics starting in January 2006, the registration deadline is December 14, 2005.  Registration may be done online at norfolkgirlssoftball.org.  Also, there are other local facilities that offer clinics. 

The tryouts for this team are early this year because of the preparation for the State Tournament.  The girls on this team will be playing on some different teams in the spring.  Therefore, we will need to give them time to practice together aside from the Spring League.  The practice commitment will also be disclosed prior to tryouts.

Anyone interested in being the Head Coach for the tournament team should contact Dave McElwee at dmcelwee1960@yahoo.com  or (508)528-1055 by January 4, 2006.  The Head Coach will be chosen from the interested individuals and voted on at the next Board Meeting January 11, 2006.

We will be hosting an information session in early February prior to the tryouts to answer any questions regarding anything to do with this Summer Team.  The tryouts are scheduled for Monday,

February 27, 2006 at Extra Innings.  These tryouts will be held in conjunction with the Spring Evaluation and tryouts.

Summer tryouts for the following age groups will be held in May as usual (16U, 14U, 12U, & 10U)

These teams will participate in the regular summer program with 2 games/week.
